Witney Antiques

Amongst our important collection of seventeenth century embroidery will be found raisedwork (sometimes referred to as stump work) oftain embellished with precious stones, pearls, beads, spangles and coral, these charming items are highly collected. Other techniques including canvas work and tent-stitch pictures are to be found with both religious (usually old testament) and domestic subjects. Although such objects as coifs, caskets and purses are increasingly rare we aim to have examples of the highest quality. Seventeenth century samplers of spot motif and band form along with white work and black work (Spanish work) may also be seen in the collection.

The Wilby House Casket. English. Circa 1660.

This magnificent 17th century embroidered casket is one of the finest examples to come onto the market in recent years. It’s brightness and condition are no doubt due to the fact that it has remained in one family and of having been kept in the original wooden carrying box (pictured below) which accompanies the casket. Embroidered in rich floss silks, the bottom section with opening doors revealing a series of drawers embroidered with bells and flower heads and a mirrored recess with eight gilt wood half columns. The top section with alternating panels of flora and fauna encloses a silk lined mirrored interior.

Provenance. Marriott Family. Wilby House, Suffolk.
