Rebekah Greeting Eliezer.

Eliezer was Abraham's servant and his meeting at the well with Rebekah was a popular needlework subject at the end of the seventeenth and beginning of the eighteenth century, both in raised work and tent stitch.
At the beginning of the eighteenth century a new awareness of eastern motifs becomes apparent in embroidery as is evident here. The scene set in an exotic landscape is almost identical to one illustrated in English Domestic Embroidery by Therle Hughes, Plate 16. English. Circa 1700.
