Flight into Egypt

A beautifully worked interpretation of this subject, embroidered in fine wool, with long and short tent stitch detail in silk on the faces of Mary, Joseph and Jesus.

English, Circa 1730.

Framed size: 44 x 32 cm.

When wise men came form the east. They went to Herod the king of Judaea and asked 'where is he that is born king of the Jews?' Herod consulted his priests and scribes and they told him that according to prophecy the child was in Bethlehem. Herod dispatched the wise men thither. And asked them to report back to him when they had located the infant. Thus the wise men visited Jesus in the stable. When they departed an angel appeared to Joseph and told him to flee into Egypt for Herod would seek the child to destroy him. The wise men did not return to Herod and Herod killed all the babies of two years and less in the town of Bethlehem.
