Four Stitched Slips. First Half Seventeenth Century
It is exceptionally rare to find a panel such as this example of 'slips' fully worked but for some reason never used. The intention would have been to apply them onto a larger piece of fabric such as an embroidered picture, long cushion or bed hangings. To make the process easier to apply, thin material such as fine linen or silk was pasted onto the back before cutting out.
