Judith and Holofernes.

A very interesting 17th century panel which has been only half completed showing rest of the design already drawn out.
The main subject is most likely the Old Testament story of Judith and Holofernes.

When the Assyrian army laid siege to Bethulia Judith, a rich and beautiful widow devised a plan to save the city.
After catching the eye of General Holofernes Judith was invited to a banquet at which Holofernes intended to seduce her.
However Holofernes fell into a drunken stupor and Judith seized his sword and with two strokes struck off his head.

The colour of the worked embroidery gives an idea how vibrant the
original colours of 17th century embroidery could be.
English . Circa 1660.

Framed size: 57 x 47 cm.
