Counter-Reformation Embroidery
An unusual and interesting embroidery with much of the biblical symbolism taken from the Book of Revelation. Other images include: the Judgement of Solomon and Peter's release from prison (Acts 12.1-11)
and four mounted figures representing the four Continents.
Although this may not at first appear related to other religious elements in the embroidery,
they were used in the Counter-Reformation to symbolise the worldwide spread of Catholicism,
their recognized attributes in art being later established in the 17th century. Circa 1650
Framed size: 73 x 47 cm.
