The Wilby House Casket. English. Circa 1660.

This magnificent 17th century embroidered casket is one of the finest examples to come onto the market in recent years. Itís brightness and condition are no doubt due to the fact that it has remained in one family and of having been kept in the original wooden carrying box (pictured below) which accompanies the casket. Embroidered in rich floss silks, the bottom section with opening doors revealing a series of drawers embroidered with bells and flower heads and a mirrored recess with eight gilt wood half columns. The top section with alternating panels of flora and fauna encloses a silk lined mirrored interior.

Provenance. Marriott Family. Wilby House, Suffolk.
