Eliza Jane Simpson. Aged 12. 1841.
A large and soporific tiger dominates this sampler staring solemnly out of the canvas with black bead eyes.
Above this the top cartouche depicts one of the most popular pets of 19th century England, a King Charles spaniel.
One of a pair the other sampler was worked by Frances Harriet Simpson, Aged 12. Frances's sampler is less colourful by comparison and features a reclining stag and a pheasant. Frances's sampler also bears the same date of 1841 still visible although but the stitches have been unpicked. The samplers are the same size and in their original rosewood frames.
Framed size: 66 x 66 cm.
