Anna Sophia Mendlemas. 1739.

A fine German sampler worked on unbleached linen with silk and metallic threads. The text, verse and date contained within a conventional cartouche. Numerous images include the crucifixion, sun and moon, a ship at anchor, flying cherubs and Adam and Eve. Religious symbols appear frequently on German samplers, particularly on those from Protestant regions. According to Fawdry and Brown in 'The Book of Samplers,' German samplers were regarded as heirlooms, those made by grandmother, mother and daughter were often kept together.
