

Mourning Embroidery. Early 19th century.
Mourning embroideries were very popular with embroiderers in America and became fashionable during the first years of the 19th century.
In this scene a large monument with a classical urn is inscribed with the name Wentin and set amongst a country landscape with a large house and formal driveway. The figure of a fashionably dressed mourning female stands beside it with her hat pulled low over her face.
Worked in a mixture of wool and silk and contained within a magnificent broad period mahogany frame.
