Sarah Lindoe
1740

Sarah was born on July 11. 1729 and baptised at St Augustine's Church, Norwich in the county of Norfolk, her parents being Thomas and Sarah Lindoe.
This graceful embroidery is in the tradition of crewel work hangings of the period which were influenced by imports of painted cloths from India. Beautifully shaded curling leaves and blossoms spring on arching stems from a basket attracting small insects. The whole composition attractively balanced with weight to the base of the design which tapers up to a single flower head.
The embroidery can be compared to one worked approximately fifty years later by hannah Morris of philadelphia, U.S.A. See Betty Ring. Childhood Embroidery, Vol II. Fig. 381.
Worked in long and short, satin, stem, French knot, chain and eyelet stitch. Polychrome silk threads on linen.
