Eliz Stubbins early 19th century
Fine early 19th century English sampler worked by Eliz Stubbins. The sampler worked in brightly coloured silks on a very fine gauze ground relates to a very similar sampler held in the collection of the Cooper Hewitt Museum, New York. The sampler in the Cooper Hewitt Collection is worked by Maria Handsley and is dated 1810 enabling us to confidently date this example to the early 19th century. Research is ongoing to establish the likely location of the two girls and their teacher. Retaining lovely original colour and condition.
